Glenn Phillips set the stage for the Champions Trophy by scoring his maiden one-day international century, leading New Zealand to a 78-run victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the tri-nation series.
However, a concerning incident occurred for the Kiwis when Rachin Ravindra took a blow to the face while attempting to catch a ball near the boundary.
The all-rounder collapsed after being struck in the head, having lost sight of the ball in the floodlights.
New Zealand Cricket announced that Ravindra sustained a facial cut but was “otherwise fine”, confirming he had passed his initial head injury assessment (HIA).
“He was conscious throughout, which is wonderful,” Phillips remarked.
“It was undoubtedly a frightening moment. He lost the ball in the lights, and unfortunately, the ball had the upper hand this time. He’s under observation, and I’m confident he’ll be back on the field in no time.”

Phillips scored an impressive unbeaten 106 off 74 deliveries, featuring six fours and seven sixes, as New Zealand compiled 6-330 in their allotted 50 overs on a well-prepared flat pitch, aided by Daryl Mitchell (81) and Kane Williamson (58), who both adapted well to the conditions ahead of the 50-over Champions Trophy.
In response, Fakhar Zaman, returning to international cricket after more than seven months due to health problems, played a fierce innings of 84 off 69. However, the rest of the Pakistan top order found it challenging against the New Zealand spin attack.
Pakistan was ultimately dismissed for 252 in 47.5 overs.
The Champions Trophy, hosted jointly by Pakistan and the UAE, is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9.
