The world’s top-ranked female player, Aryna Sabalenka, dismissed inquiries regarding Novak Djokovic’s future in tennis, urging reporters to “leave him alone” when questioned about the Serbian star’s ability to continue competing at a high level.
Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion who has reached the semi-finals of the French Open just once, triumphed over Olga Danilovic with a score of 6-2, 6-3 at Court Philippe-Chatrier, advancing to the fourth round.
Djokovic is set to face Filip Musolic on Sunday morning AEST in the third round, having made a strong start in the tournament, going through without losing a single set.
Last week marked Djokovic’s 38th birthday, and he celebrated his 100th career title in Geneva, yet his performance has seen a decline since securing gold at the Paris Olympics last year.
In the wake of several early exits from tournaments, media speculation regarding Djokovic’s physical fitness and mental resilience has increased.
When Sabalenka was approached about the world No. 6 after her win over Danilovic, she pleaded for the media to ease their scrutiny.

“You’re putting a lot of pressure on Novak. Just let him be. Look at him, he’s fit and strong. Mentally and physically, I think he could keep going for another two or three years. I don’t know,” Sabalenka commented.
“He’s performing well, but ups and downs are part of everyone’s journey. As one ages, maintaining consistent performance becomes more challenging.
“Yet, whenever he’s healthy and fits, he’s right up there playing extraordinary tennis.”

“So just let him be. If he retires tomorrow, it will make everyone sad, don’t you think? There are still another 10 to 15 years for Jannik [Sinner] and [Carlos] Alcaraz to establish their greatness.
“But honestly, let him enjoy his game. It was heartbreaking to see the big four together on the court during that ceremony, realising that three of them have stepped away. Fans truly miss their matches.
“Let’s allow Novak to continue showcasing his talent and inspiring the next generation.”
Speculation regarding Djokovic’s retirement surfaced after he revealed at Nadal’s ceremony that he has been contemplating his own career’s end.
“I was honestly considering my own future as well just last night while we were listening to Rafa’s speech, especially those moments shared amongst the three of us in the back room,” he shared.
“But I didn’t pinpoint an exact date or moment, if that’s what you’re hoping to know.”
