Atalanta must have faith in their ability to clinch the Serie A title, declared manager Gian Piero Gasperini following Sunday’s remarkable 4-0 win over Juventus, bringing them to within three points of league leaders Inter Milan, whom they will face next week.
Atalanta delivered a stellar display at the Allianz Stadium, moving up to 58 points and solidifying their position in third place as they prepare for a crucial home match that could influence their Scudetto aspirations against the reigning champions, Inter.
“We must never stop dreaming. While it might seem impossible, if you truly believe, then what seems unattainable can indeed become reality,” Gasperini told the media.
“We recognise that Inter and (second-placed) Napoli are both exceptional teams, and we’ve suffered seven consecutive defeats against Inter, but that could also serve as motivation.
“This is the first time we’ve reached this point in the season with a chance for the top position, so anything is possible.”
The Italian coach expressed his joy at halting Juventus’ five-match winning streak in the league, with Atalanta securing their most comprehensive victory in Turin.
“The result is a testament to our performance. This is a remarkable outcome for us. It’s hard to envision such a win, considering Juventus’ recent form,” Gasperini remarked.
“Our performance was nearly flawless, though we did squander a few chances. Today, we played exceptionally well.”
Gas and praised forward Ademola Lookman for netting his 13th goal in Serie A, just weeks after describing the Nigerian as “one of the most inaccurate penalty takers he had ever encountered” following their Champions League exit against Club Brugge.
“Opinions may vary, but Lookman has evolved into an outstanding player, especially when he focuses on the team,” he noted.
“Atalanta has elevated him, and he, in turn, has enabled Atalanta to shine. I firmly believe he’ll eventually don the captain’s armband, with Atalanta etched in his heart.“
