Atalanta’s manager Gian Piero Gasperini (66) has expressed that a shortage of fit strikers has significantly impacted the team’s performance, following their goalless draw with mid-table Cagliari on Saturday.
With Cagliari positioned 13th in the league, Atalanta were hoping to secure a victory at home in order to close the gap on Serie A leaders Napoli.
However, Gasperini’s team found it difficult to carve out clear opportunities, currently sitting in third place with 51 points—five points behind Napoli and three adrift of Inter Milan in second place.
Injuries have sidelined Atalanta forwards Ademola Lookman, Gianluca Scamacca, and midfielder Daniel Maldini in recent weeks.
“We could have taken all three points today, but we’re facing a challenging situation due to our lack of available players,” Gasperini remarked to DAZN.
“The absence of strikers is severely affecting us, though those who step in are performing admirably; everyone is adjusting well.
“It’s increasingly difficult for us to secure wins, particularly at home, even though we dominated most of the match, which led to this result.“
Gasperini also turned his attention to the upcoming Champions League encounter against Club Brugge on Tuesday, following their narrow 2-1 loss in the first leg due to a late penalty.
“This match is highly significant for us, especially considering how the first leg unfolded. Brugge possess both technical skill and athletic ability, so we have to score goals,” he noted.
“A single win isn’t sufficient now; the situation has become more complex due to the outcome of that first leg.
“We must give our all to progress to the next round, which was well within our grasp before the first leg.“
