Real Madrid have been struck by a series of injury issues, with defenders Ferland Mendy and David Alaba both potentially facing season-ending injuries, as confirmed by the Spanish club on Tuesday.
Mendy sustained a rupture in his right thigh during the Copa del Rey final defeat against Barcelona, the club reported on Tuesday.
Local media sources indicated that Mendy could be sidelined for up to a month due to this latest setback, adding to the woes of the French left-back, who has already missed a significant portion of the season due to various injuries.
“After conducting tests on our player Ferland Mendy… he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the proximal tendon of the anterior rectus in the right quadriceps,” Real Madrid stated in an announcement.
A hamstring injury incurred in March kept Mendy out for over a month, while a muscle issue had previously ruled him out for nearly two weeks in December.
Austria international Alaba had to be substituted due to injury during Real Madrid’s 1–0 victory over Getafe last week.
This latest injury follows closely on the heels of his return from a muscle strain sustained in February, after spending more than a year recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
After coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s final, the 32-year-old centre-back “has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his left knee,” as stated by Real Madrid.
Reports suggest that Alaba will require surgery before embarking on a rehabilitation process lasting six to eight weeks.
The injuries to Mendy and Alaba increase the list of absentees in Real Madrid’s defensive line, with Antonio Rudiger also undergoing knee surgery earlier on Tuesday.
Currently, with only five games left in the season, Real Madrid find themselves four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona and will host Celta Vigo this Sunday.
