On Wednesday, FC Copenhagen clarified that the remarks made by major shareholder Lars Seier Christensen regarding Volodymyr Zelenskyj do not represent the club’s official stance.
Christensen, who holds a 22.55 per cent stake in PARKEN Sport & Entertainment, the parent company of FC Copenhagen, faced significant backlash after his comments on Facebook followed a contentious exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in the Oval Office on Saturday.
He described Zelenskyj as ‘incompetent, rude, and deeply foolish’ and claimed that the Ukrainian leader behaved ‘disrespectfully’ during the meeting with Trump.
In light of the controversy, FC Copenhagen felt compelled to address the situation as it was overshadowing their preparations for the pivotal Champions League clash against Chelsea.
“FC Copenhagen does not hold a position on American politics or many other issues. We have a football match that should be our primary focus. We are looking forward to facing Chelsea, but instead we’re discussing statements made on social media,” said Football Director Jacob Lauersen to TV2 Sport.
“Living in a country with freedom of speech, while Lars Seier Christensen is entitled to his views, it’s important to note that these do not reflect the club’s standpoint or its values. Therefore, we agree to disagree on his statements, which do not alter the club’s official position,” Lauersen explained, stating that Christensen does not represent FC Copenhagen as he is neither a board member nor part of the executive team.
“While we acknowledge that he is a major shareholder, it’s surprising how many people misinterpret the club’s position regardless of comments made by a shareholder,” added Jacob Lauersen.
FC Copenhagen will take on Chelsea at home on Thursday evening at 18:45 CET at Parken Stadium.
