Phil Gould posits that the future of the Broncos hinges on the players’ willingness to embrace coach Michael Maguire as the club steps into a new chapter.
Maguire has taken over from Broncos legend Kevin Walters, earning support to steer the team back to finals contention.
Walters was let go following a disappointing 12th-place finish, despite the team reaching the grand final the previous year and suffering a heartbreaking loss to the Panthers within just 15 minutes.
Gould argues that last season showed a “dependence on talent” over enhancing the system.
“Their talent carried them to the grand final the year before, but the absence of a solid system left them vulnerable under pressure in 2024,” he remarked during an episode of Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus podcast.
He further stated that Maguire is “focused on the system.”

However, the most critical aspect of Maguire’s tenure will be how the Broncos players react to his coaching style.

Gould noted that if everything aligns, the Broncos have a genuine chance to disrupt the Panthers’ reign.
“They have the potential to win the championship, but we thought the same last year,” he added.
“I believe Michael Maguire will either pave their way or be their downfall; those players who go along with him and come out the other side will be better for the experience.”
“They might as well get on board. If they do, they can take home the trophy.”
Brisbane kicked off the year on a high note by clinching the pre-season challenge, mirroring their success from the previous year under Walters.
Their season opener will see them face the Roosters on March 6.
