As anticipation builds for the Champions League final against PSG this Saturday, Flashcore secured an exclusive interview with Inter Milan icon Javier Zanetti.
Reflecting on the season, how do you view it, and what factors contributed to Inter reaching the final?
“Overall, it’s been a positive season. We’ve shown competitiveness in every tournament we’ve participated in. Now, we have one final milestone to achieve—a Champions League final, which would be a fantastic way to fulfil this dream.”
It’s noteworthy to make it back to the final two years later.
“Reaching two finals in three years is no small feat. After our last encounter with Manchester City, where opinions favoured City as favourites but the match proved different, we just fell short. Now, we have another opportunity. Football often provides chances for redemption, and hopefully, this is ours.”
With the Champions League final imminent, how do you perceive Paris Saint-Germain? Are they a more cohesive team, playing with better structure?
“Both teams have earned their places in the final by overcoming formidable opponents. I believe Luis Enrique is an exceptional coach who has instilled a strong identity in PSG. It certainly won’t be an easy match; quite the opposite, it will be challenging.
“They boast some formidable players like Dembele, and Donnarumma is in fantastic form. I’m looking forward to a thrilling final where two sides committed to playing attractive football will clash, likely producing a fiercely contested and well-balanced encounter.”

Arteta mentioned after the semi-final that they were the superior side based on their style of play. Do you agree or believe it was an exaggeration?
“No, I think Arteta’s comments stem from their impressive run in the Champions League. However, when faced with a strong team like Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated them, it’s essential to acknowledge PSG’s performance.”
In regards to the new Champions League format, do you think it has enriched the spectacle for fans or improved the competition itself?
“It has benefited both aspects. All teams were pushed to be aggressive, avoiding complacency. With eight matches to accumulate points, teams had to strive for victory in every game, making the tournament compelling.
“Yes, it does mean additional matches, but the Champions League has always been a dazzling competition. It is arguably the most significant event worldwide after the World Cup, and to be involved—being part of it—is a true honour.”
Regarding Liverpool’s journey, where they collected many points yet were eliminated early…
“That’s just football; it has its moments. Liverpool performed exceptionally in their initial matches, but as the competition progresses, the challenges increase. They encountered PSG, who ultimately ended their campaign.”
Simone Inzaghi has been at the helm for a while now. How do you assess his performance?
“He’s been doing remarkably well. This is his fourth year with us, and he has a clear tactical vision. The players support him because he establishes a solid identity for the team, and it shows; they play appealing football.
“He has also grown significantly, and right now, he is experiencing a wonderful phase in his career. He and his staff have truly earned this final opportunity.”

Do you envision him becoming a long-term figure for Inter, akin to Sir Alex Ferguson, or do you think every cycle must eventually end?
“(laughs). Firstly, both he and his family feel very content here. He’s made a comfortable space for himself, and the support from fans further enhances that. He seems to be at ease.”
How do you assess Lautaro Martinez, the star player, and did you foresee his development at the club over the years?
“I’m genuinely delighted for Lautaro. He’s been with us for quite a while and consistently demonstrates unwavering commitment. He’s a key figure and captain, showing great comfort at the club, which reminds me of my early days.
“I wish him all the best because he’s a player who deserves every success for his hard work. He continually supports his teammates, is well-loved by fans, and embodies the spirit of a captain. I hope he enjoys many more successful moments with Inter at the top level.”
Do you foresee him having a career path similar to yours? Would you wish that for him?
“I certainly hope so, as my experiences at Inter were profoundly fulfilling, linked to how I lived it and what the club signifies to me. I truly wish he can experience all of those emotions.”
