GWS star Finn Callaghan has opted out of what would have been the largest contract in AFL history, choosing to remain with the Giants until he reaches free agency.
Reports indicate that St Kilda made a bold verbal offer, proposing a deal of at least 10 years and over $17 million in an attempt to bring the 50-gamer back to Melbourne’s bayside.
If he had accepted this lucrative contract, Callaghan would have immediately become the highest-paid player in the league with the longest tenure.
However, the 21-year-old is poised to sign a new four-year contract that will see him stay with the Giants until the end of 2029, unless an unforeseen last-minute change occurs.
Despite being aware of the substantial offer—which came alongside other, lesser proposals—Callaghan is committed to GWS.

Industry insiders believe his contract with GWS could surpass $4 million over the four years.
While the deal promises a substantial payday, it pales in comparison to what Callaghan might have earned at Moorabbin had he made the switch.
His manager, Tom Seccull, who was approached for comment on Sunday, has recently been in discussions with GWS list manager Jason McCartney in Sydney.
St Kilda has had an interest in Callaghan since he was drafted as the No. 3 pick in 2021, and their pursuit of him mirrors previous attempts to sign players like Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tom De Koning, Zach Merrett, and Andrew Brayshaw.
Under the leadership of Ross Lyon, along with Graeme ‘Gubby’ Allen and Stephen Silvagni, the Saints are transparent about their ambitions to bolster their list and secure a marquee player.

Brayshaw is poised to secure a long-term commitment with the Dockers, while Davies-Uniacke and De Koning are both presented with seven-year contracts at North Melbourne and Carlton respectively.
The recent discussions around Callaghan’s offer resemble last year’s pursuit of Merrett, where the Saints, although denying any formal negotiations, hinted at a life-changing offer for Essendon’s captain, should he decide to seek a trade.
At GWS, Callaghan is highly valued for his durability, leadership qualities, and character.
