Andrew Johns has expressed his disappointment regarding Manly’s “disrespectful” contract proposal directed at captain Daly Cherry-Evans for the upcoming season.
Although he is the oldest player competing at 36 years of age, Cherry-Evans is reportedly eager to extend his storied career at least until the 2026 season.
There has been talk suggesting Cherry-Evans may be looking for a two-year contract extension.
While details have been sparse, NRL reports indicate the Sea Eagles have offered Cherry-Evans a one-year deal worth $600,000, despite him being one of the elite playmakers in the game and having captained at State of Origin level last year.
This offer would represent a substantial pay reduction for Cherry-Evans, who is currently earning over $1 million, leading Johns to question Manly’s approach to negotiations.

Andrew Johns has shared his thoughts on Daly Cherry-Evans’ next contract. Nine
“I find this offer quite disrespectful,” he remarked on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
“If he entered the open market, given the current climate, he could likely secure around $1.3 million, possibly even more.”
“At 36, he remains remarkably durable and throughout his career, he has only missed 20 games. This reflects his professionalism and intelligence in avoiding heavy contact.”
“They need to reach a compromise; while he can’t continue to earn over a million, I believe a fair salary would be around $800,000 to $850,000.”
“You don’t extend such a lowball offer to a player of Daly’s standing.”

Anthony Seibold commented earlier this week, expressing his desire to retain the No.7 for as long as he wishes to play. However, the chatter surrounding the situation is likely to persist until an agreement is finalised.
Johns believes that seeing the halfback in different team colours “wouldn’t feel right,” highlighting that very few players agree to take pay cuts in pursuit of success.
“Without hesitation, I’d sign him for two years,” he affirmed.
“That’s the kind of commitment you see from strong clubs with experienced senior players—they’re willing to take less for the team. These days, clubs face challenges during negotiations, especially for key positions.
“He cannot end his career with another team; it simply wouldn’t suit him. I’m convinced that the rugby league gods wouldn’t allow that.”

“Manly has a promising roster with some outstanding players. If Daly were to leave, they may struggle to find a replacement among the current options available.
“It’s crucial they keep him on board; they need his experience and leadership.”
Cherry-Evans did sustain a back injury in round two, but he is anticipated to play on Sunday.
In contrast, star fullback Tom Trbojevic will miss the game against Canberra due to a recent hamstring injury, but he is expected to return in round four.
