Erik ten Hag, the former manager of Manchester United, is reportedly a leading contender for a return to Ajax, as per Dutch media sources.
Francesco Farioli, the Italian coach, confirmed his departure from Ajax on Monday after the team secured a second-place finish in the Dutch Eredivisie. He cited conflicts with the executive board over key issues as the reason for his unexpected exit.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf indicates that Erik ten Hag is one of two names on Ajax’s shortlist to replace Farioli. Ten Hag previously led Ajax during a golden era from 2018 to 2022, securing three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Bekers, and reaching the semi-finals of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.
Since his departure from Manchester United in November 2024, Ten Hag has been without a managerial position. During his two-year tenure at United, he claimed the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
Paul Simonis
The other contender on Ajax’s shortlist is Paul Simonis, currently managing Go Ahead Eagles. The 40-year-old Dutchman succeeded Rene Hake, who moved to Manchester United in summer 2024 to support Ten Hag.
Simonis and the Eagles have had a stellar season, clinching the KNVB Beker, the first major trophy in the club’s history, while also showcasing a captivating and modern style of play, marking the most successful season in the club’s history.
According to De Telegraaf, both Ten Hag and Simonis have already engaged in conversations with Ajax anticipating Farioli’s departure from the club.
