Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is poised to miss the League Cup final against Liverpool after receiving a red card for violent conduct during Sunday’s match against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat after extra time in the FA Cup fifth round, a harsh ending to the game as Gordon was sent off for pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the face.
A red card for violent conduct typically results in a three-match suspension, which would see the England international sidelined for the important clash at Wembley on March 16.
“It seemed excessive, but we’ll have to review it thoroughly. We haven’t had a chance to look at the replay yet. From my initial perspective, it did seem a bit excessive,” commented manager Eddie Howe.
When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Howe replied: “It’s a potential option. Anthony had no intention to cause harm. I’ve only had a brief chat with him before coming out to address you, and he was visibly upset.”
Gordon’s absence would be a significant setback for Newcastle as they aim to secure their first major trophy since 1955.
At 24 years old, he has contributed nine goals across all competitions, along with six assists.
Newcastle is also anxious about the fitness of their top scorer Alexander Isak and full-back Kieran Trippier, both of whom had to leave the pitch due to injury concerns. Isak made his return after missing the previous midweek Premier League loss to Liverpool.
“We’re hopeful these don’t escalate into serious issues, as that would be incredibly challenging for us,” Howe stated. “Our squad lacks the depth we actually need.”
