Atletico Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s resilience after they fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure an electrifying 4-4 draw against Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Tuesday.
Simeone was visibly animated on the sideline when forward Alexander Sorloth netted the equaliser during a counter-attack in the dying moments of the match, scoring in the third minute of stoppage time to salvage a crucial point.
“What I admire most is the spirit displayed by this team. The players have shown an extraordinary gladiatorial resolve that is truly inspiring,” the Argentinian said during the post-match press conference.
“Barcelona possess remarkable abilities, but we have our strengths too, and we demonstrated what we are capable of out there.
“The celebration following our fourth goal was a pure explosion of joy. At 4-2, it seemed quite a challenge to turn things around, but the bravery shown by the players was exceptional, allowing us to leave the tie balanced for the return leg on April 2.
“The team displayed immense character and put in a solid performance, maintaining their mentality and showcasing a tremendous competitive spirit.”
However, Simeone did voice disappointment over his team’s defensive frailties, particularly conceding two goals from corner kicks, which he labelled unacceptable.
“It’s inevitable that a team like Barcelona will score at some point; what troubles me is conceding two goals from set pieces. It’s an area where we need to improve both individually and collectively,” he noted.
“Nonetheless, the match was far from straightforward, but the lads exhibited the competitive edge that I absolutely cherish.”
