Cyclone Alfred is causing considerable disruption in the sporting arena, leading to the cancellation of this weekend’s WPGA Championship on the Gold Coast.
As significant footy leagues develop contingency strategies in response to the unpredictable weather expected to affect south-east Queensland this week, officials have chosen to proceed with caution following “extensive consultations”.
This decision means that both the WPGA event and the Gold Coast Festival of Golf will be shelved prior to their planned kick-off on Thursday.
A statement released on Tuesday morning confirmed that no matches will take place this week, with plans for the tournament to return next year.
“After thorough discussions with all involved parties, we have decided to cancel the 2025 Australian WPGA Championship and Gold Coast Festival of Golf due to the anticipated effects of Cyclone Alfred,” the statement indicated.
“In light of weather predictions and ongoing communication with the Queensland Government, Gold Coast City Council, Mulpha Group, Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club and the Ladies European Tour, we have made the unprecedented choice to cancel the event before the first day of play scheduled for Thursday.”

“Given the forecast of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and anticipated flooding, we felt it was necessary to prioritise the safety of players, staff, fans, and all contributors.
“While disappointing, all parties are now looking towards 2026, with plans underway to ensure an exciting experience for the Australian WPGA Championship and Gold Coast Festival of Golf.”
Currently, the AFL showdown between Brisbane and Geelong has yet to be cancelled, as has the NRL match featuring the Dolphins against the Rabbitohs.
