Deportivo La Coruña striker Blessing Nkor (21) is optimistic that Nigeria can reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, despite facing stiff competition from defending champions South Africa and the host nation, Morocco.
The Super Falcons will be seeking to extend their record with a 12th title in their 15th tournament appearance when the competition kicks off in July.
Nigeria’s last outing saw them finish in a disappointing fourth place, marking their worst performance in the tournament’s history.
However, the Spain-based forward is hopeful about the Falcons’ prospects in Morocco, believing that insights gained from past tournaments, a wealth of talent, and a strong coaching staff will provide them with a competitive edge.
“I often converse with my international teammates, and we share a unified vision.
“With all due respect to the other teams, I strongly believe we will dominate Africa again, having learned from our previous experience and with the backing of a robust coaching team.”
“The chance to reclaim the African champions title inspires us greatly, and we are committed to doing whatever it takes to reach this goal, although we recognise it won’t be an easy task.”
NO TEAM WILL BE TAKEN LIGHTLY
Nigeria faces a challenging Group B, where they will encounter quarterfinalists from the last edition, Botswana, alongside Tunisia and Algeria, who have struggled to progress past the group stage in their last five appearances.
While many expect the Super Falcons to rise above adversity, Nkor emphasises that no team will be underestimated, as surprises are a common aspect of football.
“It all seems straightforward on paper until the match kicks off. Women’s football in Africa has matured, and every team desires to defeat us,” she stated.
“We are acutely aware of this, and we will not underestimate any opponent. We’ll approach each game with the same intensity as we would against the world’s leading teams.
“As for identifying an easier opponent, I won’t point out any team, as we consider every rival a potential hurdle to our ambitions.”
“This group is going to be tough because these teams know us well, but we’ll take it one match at a time and see how it plays out.
“We have an excellent technical staff led by coach Justin Madugu, and they are undoubtedly working hard to create a winning game plan.”
HOW OSHOALA AND AJIBADE INFLUENCE NKOR
Having previously represented Nigeria at the U-20 level, Nkor made her senior debut in an international friendly against France on November 30, 2024.
In that match, which ended 2-1 in favour of the French, the former Sunshine Queens and Yanga Princess goal scorer started the game before being substituted early in the second half for Sikiratu Isah.
The 21-year-old is aware that she has much to learn and seeks to emulate her idols, Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade.
She remarked: “Asisat and Rasheedat are outstanding players and role models for me.
“Their contributions to the national team, from youth to senior levels, make them truly exceptional.
“I often strive to integrate elements of their playing styles into my own, as it is always beneficial to learn from the elite.”
“Their success has continually inspired me to aim for greater heights. My move to Spain was partly motivated by their achievements there.
“Playing alongside Oshoala in the national team is one of my biggest dreams, and I feel fortunate that it will soon become a reality.”
