France coach Didier Deschamps will likely encounter some of his players in unexpected spirits when they return from the weekend festivities at Paris Saint-Germain, as forward Ousmane Dembele remarked after the club’s inaugural Champions League victory.
PSG dominated Inter Milan with a staggering 5-0 win in the final held in Munich on Saturday, achieving the largest margin of victory in the history of the UEFA Champions League finale.
French squad members, including PSG’s Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, and Dembele, are set to reunite at the national training facility in Clairefontaine from Monday, gearing up for Thursday’s Nations League semi-final against Spain.
“There you have it, we’ve made an entire nation, an entire city proud. As they say, the celebration is just beginning. Didier is going to discover us in a rather unusual state,” quipped the 28-year-old during an interview on French television station M6.
The France international described the celebrations as a long-awaited release following years of disappointment.
PSG’s last appearance in a Champions League final before this was in 2020, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
“It’s remarkable, what we’ve just achieved. Winning finals is fantastic, but doing so in this manner is even sweeter, it’s truly exhilarating,” commented Dembele.
“We’re genuinely deserving of this. After so many years of struggles and challenges, I believe Paris Saint-Germain has truly earned this victory.”
Revelry has engulfed Paris as fans eagerly await the team’s return on Sunday; however, Dembele has urged supporters to maintain a spirit of peaceful celebration.
Sadly, over 500 individuals were apprehended by authorities, and two casualties were reported amidst the chaotic celebrations across France.
