Myles Lewis-Skelly has quickly established himself as a valuable asset for England, with a promising future ahead, according to midfielder Declan Rice. This comes after the 18-year-old left-back made history by becoming the youngest player to score on his senior debut for the national team during the 2-0 win over Albania in their World Cup qualifying Group K opener on Friday.
Lewis-Skelly netted the opening goal for England in the 20th minute of the match at Wembley.
A graduate of the Arsenal academy, Lewis-Skelly received his first call-up to the England squad after a standout season with the North London side.
“Every week he’s demonstrated just how talented he is, along with the boldness he brings to his game,” Rice remarked to the British media about his teammate at Arsenal.
“It all depends on him—how much he desires it and how determined he is to keep pushing. He must maintain that hunger every single day. It’s essential for him to stay true to himself at Arsenal’s training ground and with England, continuously striving to improve.”
“He’s a significant asset for us right now. At just 18 years old, he has a bright future ahead in the sport if he continues to deliver strong performances.”
“He wasn’t even aware he would be starting until today, but I had faith he would perform well because he possesses that self-belief.”
Newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel also expressed his excitement regarding the young player’s debut.
“He radiates confidence and possesses a great sense of humour, along with an open and mature character,” the German coach commented. “What you observe on the pitch is mirrored off the pitch… He plays with an innate confidence, which defines his style of football.”
