Joseph Manu is contemplating requesting a release from his contract with French rugby union club Racing 92 on compassionate grounds.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, the two-time NRL premiership champion is evaluating this option, which would see him relocating to France in July.
Manu initially inked a one-year deal with an option for a second year, but he is now considering a return to either Sydney or New Zealand due to family circumstances.
Should he apply for and receive his release from Racing 92 prior to the end of June, it would open the possibility of Manu making a return to the NRL later this year.
He signed his contract before the departure of coach Stuart Lancaster.
It remains uncertain whether Manu aims to come back to Sydney or return to New Zealand.
Warriors CEO Cameron George stated he was not aware of Manu’s situation on Wednesday evening.
“We haven’t had any discussions regarding Joey Manu’s future, but if he became available, we would certainly engage with his management,” George commented. “Up until now, we have had no discussions at all.”

Due to salary cap limitations, the Roosters would have restricted options to offer Manu.
In contrast, the Warriors have unexpectedly gained salary cap room following the unexpected retirement of their captain Tohu Harris during the pre-season.
Manu has indicated a willingness to play at fullback, a position he couldn’t secure at the Roosters with captain James Tedesco ahead of him.
Moreover, the Warriors could present the best chance for Manu to don the No. 1 jersey, especially with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad linked to a potential move to the Super League next year.
