Elijah Hollands from Carlton has decided to take personal leave just before the start of the AFL season, with the club praising the young forward for his “bravery in seeking help”.
Two days ahead of Carlton’s opening match against Richmond, the club confirmed that Hollands would be on leave for an indefinite duration.
“We commend Elijah for his bravery in coming forward to seek assistance, and we are committed to working with him to ensure he receives all the support necessary,” said Carlton’s football boss, Brad Lloyd, in a statement.
“While Elijah has been active in the football program, our primary concern is his well-being as an individual. This leave will allow him to concentrate on himself, and he will have all the time he needs to do so.”
“The specifics of Elijah’s engagement with the football program during this time will be managed appropriately, but his health and happiness are our top priority.”

“We would once again like to recognise Elijah for his initiative in reaching out to us for support, and we will undoubtedly continue to provide him with that assistance.”
In October 2023, Hollands pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and subsequently received a two-match suspension from the AFL.
The Wodonga native had recently joined Carlton, but the incident occurred during his tenure at the Gold Coast Suns.
He has managed to avoid a criminal conviction.
