Sydney FC vs Wellington Phoenix – Shark Highlights | Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 | Round 23
An intense round of Isuzu UTE A-League action unfolded on Sunday night at Allianz Stadium as Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix battled to a 1-1 draw, showcasing a hard-fought encounter.
Following their historic AFC Asian Champions League victory over Jeonbuk Motors on Thursday, Sydney came charging back into A-League competition, with Adrian Segecic netting an early goal in the seventh minute to give them the lead against the Phoenix.
However, Wellington’s Kosta Barbarouses equalised just before halftime, scoring a goal that was initially disallowed for offside, but a VAR review led to the decision being overturned.
In the second half, Sydney head coach Ufuk Talay introduced Douglas Costa and Jaiden Kucharski from the substitutes’ bench, who injected fresh energy into the Sky Blues’ attack. Kucharski came close to restoring Sydney’s lead, but Wellington’s goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi made some brilliant saves to keep the score level.
Wellington approached Round 23 following four consecutive defeats, and after suffering a heavy 4-1 loss to Western United last weekend, Giancarlo Italiano’s team showed tremendous resilience to fight for a draw against Sydney FC.
Despite Sydney dominating the match with 21 shots compared to Wellington’s three, and holding over 70% possession, they could not convert their chances into another goal as the match ended in a stalemate.
This weekend was particularly bright for young Australian strikers, with Segecic joining Adelaide United’s Archie Goodwin, Wanderers’ Nicolas Milanovic, and Western United’s Noah Botic in finding the net in Round 23, further intensifying the race for the Golden Boot.
Segecic’s ninth goal of the season came early, giving Sydney a promising start at Allianz Stadium.
INCREDIBLE COMEBACK: 2-0 down? No worries as Western Sydney Wanderers stage a dramatic revival
Wellington, low on form and confidence, faced an uphill battle after falling behind, but Kosta Barbarouses levelled the score in the 38th minute with a goal that was initially disallowed for offside. However, after revisiting the play, referee Shaun Evans overturned the decision, confirming Barbarouses’ ninth goal of the season and bringing Wellington back into the game before the break.

Talay decided to introduce star winger Douglas Costa after halftime, and his first chance came in the 62nd minute when a long-range free-kick almost bent into the bottom-left corner, only to miss the target.
Kucharski, who also came on as a substitute, was presented with a glorious opportunity to reinstate Sydney’s lead, only for Oluwayemi to make another exceptional save.
From the corner that followed, Costa tried to catch the Phoenix keeper off guard with a direct strike, but Oluwayemi was alert and managed to push the ball away from danger.
The tension escalated at Allianz Stadium with ten minutes remaining following a controversial challenge by Kosta Barbarouses on Leo Sena, which led to a fracas involving players from both sides. Barbarouses received a yellow card for his challenge, while Alex Rufer and Rhyan Grant were also cautioned for their involvement in the altercation.
As the match drew to a close, Kucharski continued to threaten, nearly scoring again as he unleashed a powerful shot that was just tipped over the bar by a diving Oluwayemi, ensuring Wellington stayed firmly in the contest.
