GWS Giants midfielder Callan Ward has sustained a significant knee injury early in the match against Richmond.
With Ward secured on a one-year deal for the 2025 season, many believed this would be his final campaign before hanging up his boots.
The former captain of the Giants injured his right knee while attempting to tackle Richmond’s Hugo Ralphsmith.

He was escorted off the pitch by the Giants’ medical team, unable to bear weight on his injured knee.
Ward previously tore his left ACL back in 2019 when his knee buckled beneath him.
“It’s been very emotional scenes down here,” noted Geelong legend Cameron Mooney in his commentary for Fox Footy.
“Wardy, I think, is aware that this is a serious injury. He’s incredibly upset at the moment.”
“His family has already relocated to Melbourne, so it seems this was meant to be Wardy’s final year. Let’s hope this isn’t how he concludes his career.”
Tom Greene scored the opening goal of the game, with Richmond subsequently netting the next five major scores.
