Danny Welbeck made a significant impact from the bench, scoring the decisive goal in extra time as Brighton staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Newcastle 2-1 and secure their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
In the 114th minute at St James’ Park, Welbeck cleverly slotted home the winner as the Seagulls recovered from conceding an early penalty to Alexander Isak.
The match started brightly with opportunities for both teams, but Newcastle were handed a golden chance from the penalty spot when Tino Livramento was clumsily fouled by Yankuba Minteh.
Isak, back in the starting XI after a groin injury, confidently converted the penalty, blasting his shot past Bart Verbruggen from 12 yards out.
Ten minutes later, Isak thought he had scored a second goal when he fired a powerful effort into the near post, only to be denied by the offside flag.
Just before half-time, however, Minteh—who is a former Newcastle player—redeemed himself by charging through the defence to score Brighton’s first shot on target, equalising the match.
As the second half progressed, tensions escalated when Anthony Gordon was shown a red card for elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke in the head, followed shortly by Tariq Lamptey of Brighton, who received his marching orders for a deliberate foul.
In a late twist, Fabian Schar thought he had secured victory for Newcastle with a well-placed finish, only for the goal to be disallowed following a marginal call from the new semi-automated offside technology.
Brighton intensified their efforts in extra time and were rewarded just six minutes before the final whistle when Welbeck, having evaded the offside trap, expertly lifted the ball into the net over Martin Dubravka.
Later on Sunday, reigning FA Cup holders Manchester United will face Fulham at Old Trafford.
