Bournemouth eliminated Everton from the FA Cup at Goodison Park, while Southampton’s dismal season reached a new low with a humiliating defeat against Burnley on Saturday.
At the bottom of the Premier League and seemingly on a path to relegation, Southampton found no solace in the FA Cup, succumbing to a 1-0 loss at St Mary’s against second-tier Burnley.
Scott Parker’s side broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Marcus Edwards netted from close range on his debut after arriving on loan from Sporting Lisbon.
Once likened to Lionel Messi, the 26-year-old Edwards had been released by Tottenham before resurrecting his career in Lisbon.
Burnley, chasing promotion from the Championship, has now gone almost 600 minutes without conceding a goal, achieving 10 clean sheets in their last 11 matches.
The last FA Cup fixture at Goodison Park ended in disappointment for Everton, who are set to move to a new stadium next season, as Bournemouth comfortably won 2-0.
Andoni Iraola’s squad took the lead when Everton’s captain James Tarkowski fouled Antoine Semenyo in the area, allowing the Bournemouth winger to convert the penalty in the 23rd minute.
Dan Jebbison doubled the score for Bournemouth shortly before half-time, tapping in after Marcus Tavernier’s shot was parried by Jordan Pickford in the 42nd minute.

Rodrigo Muniz scored twice in Fulham’s 2-1 victory over Wigan, who play in the third tier.
Muniz opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he tapped in Ryan Sessegnon’s cross, but Jonny Smith equalised for Wigan with a curling effort in the 50th minute.
However, Fulham regained their lead just five minutes later as Muniz converted a pass from Andreas Pereira.
Ipswich, sitting second last in the Premier League, secured a convincing 4-1 victory against Frank Lampard’s Coventry.
George Hirst’s penalty in the second minute was levelled by Joel Latibeaudiere’s equaliser for the hosts in the eighth minute.
But Jack Clarke restored Ipswich’s advantage in the 28th minute and added another goal in the 37th minute, with Jaden Philogene’s strike in the 63rd minute sealing the win.
Millwall advanced to the fifth round for the first time since the 2018-19 season, courtesy of Femi Azeez’s brace in a 2-0 win over Championship leaders Leeds.
Despite making 10 changes, Leeds suffered as Azeez opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a deflected strike from outside the box.
Azeez added a second goal with a powerful shot in the 55th minute, and Millwall’s goalkeeper Liam Roberts saved Pascal Struijk’s penalty.
Later on Saturday, Chelsea will visit Brighton, while Newcastle will take on third-tier Birmingham.
