Barcelona is set to clash with Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, following the draw that took place on Wednesday. In the other semi-final matchup, Real Madrid will go up against Real Sociedad.
The first legs of the semi-finals are scheduled for February 26th, while the return legs will be hosted by Atletico and Real in the Spanish capital on April 2nd.
The last encounter between Barcelona and Atletico in the Copa del Rey semi-finals was in 2017, when the Catalan side eliminated Diego Simeone’s team with an aggregate score of 3-2.
This draw has sparked hopes for a potential Clasico in the final, featuring Real Madrid against Barcelona, a spectacle that hasn’t occurred in over a decade.
Historically, Real and Barcelona have faced each other in the Copa del Rey final on 18 occasions, with Real holding the upper hand with 11 victories, including a 2-1 win during the 2014 final in Valencia.
This season, Barcelona has bested Real twice; they claimed a dominant 4-0 victory at Santiago Bernabeu in LaLiga in October, followed by a 5-2 triumph in the Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia in January.
Currently, Real Madrid sits atop the LaLiga standings with 50 points, just one point clear of Atletico, while Barcelona trails closely behind in third place in the chase for the title.
