A rising star in Australian golf, known as “Koala Karl,” has matched the legendary Seve Ballesteros by clinching his first PGA Tour victory, all while sporting attire designed by the iconic Tiger Woods.
The press could hardly avoid the headlines.
“It’s definitely a surreal experience,” beamed 23-year-old Karl Vilips after taking home the title at the Puerto Rico Open on Monday.

“It’s truly a dream come true… this is what I envisioned as a child.”
Originally from Melbourne and later raised in Perth, Vilips showcased his talents early, clinching the US Kids Golf World Championship twice and the Callaway World Junior at ages 10 and 12.
At just 15, he shattered Woods’ record to become the youngest winner of the Junior Orange Bowl.
He carried that momentum to Stanford University, where he excelled before securing a victory on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, opening the door to the prestigious PGA Tour.
Remarkably, it only took him four tournament appearances to secure his first PGA Tour win.
He is now one of only 12 players to have won on the tour within their first four starts—Ballesteros being one of them.
Furthermore, Vilips set a new tournament record of 26-under par, with rounds of 65, 67, 66, and 64, finishing three shots ahead of Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen.
The victory earned him over $1.1 million in prize money, a figure equal to what Jason Day earned for his eighth-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as well as an entry into this week’s esteemed Players Championship.
Additionally, he will participate in the US Open this year and secured a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

The Players Championship, which was won by Australia’s Cameron Smith in 2022, has a staggering total prize pool of $40 million and is often referred to as golf’s fifth major.
While Vilips might have been relatively under the radar prior to Monday, he now has an opportunity to make a significant impact at The Players.
However, his reputation certainly precedes him on the American circuit.
He was even the first professional golfer to sign with Woods’ apparel brand, Sun Day Red, which launched last year.
Woods personally left him a voice message following his victory.
“After the round, I looked at my phone and saw a few messages. I also received a voicemail that said it was Tiger, and I found it hard to process in the moment,” Vilips shared with a laugh post-victory.
“I signed with them three weeks ago, and it’s wonderful that a Sun Day Red player has achieved a victory so soon afterward.
“It’s incredibly special and reinforces the decision they made in choosing me to represent their brand. I’m thrilled to do it as my authentic self.
“It’s a fantastic feeling, and I know everyone at the Sun Day Red team will be ecstatic. After all, looking good is part of playing well!”
