A crucial clash awaits Atletico Madrid this weekend as they travel to face LaLiga leaders Real Madrid, sitting just a point behind them in the table. However, manager Diego Simeone (54) is placing his full attention on Tuesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final against Getafe.
Currently in 14th place in LaLiga, Getafe are only three points clear of the relegation zone. Nonetheless, under the management of Jose Bordalas, they haven’t suffered a defeat in 2023 yet, maintaining an impressive six-match unbeaten streak that includes a 1-1 draw with Barcelona.
“We focus on each match, day by day. There’s no other thought than tomorrow’s game,” Simeone stated to the media on Monday.
“The profile of both the coach and the team is very distinct. Their recent performances against teams like Real Sociedad, Barcelona, and Sevilla indicate a high intensity in their play.
“They are aware of what’s at stake, and when a team understands the significance of the match, they become a formidable opponent.”

Since 2011, Getafe have been unable to take down Atletico, though Simeone’s side faced a tough challenge before securing a narrow 1-0 victory in their last encounter back in December.
A successful outing against Getafe would mean more fixtures for Atletico in an already packed schedule as they chase their first LaLiga title since the 2020-21 season while also preparing for the Champions League knockout rounds. However, the coach expressed confidence about managing the workload.
“Naturally, we all share the goal of progressing and reaching the final of the Copa del Rey,” he remarked.
“I can’t envision anything other than focusing on taking the game to a level where we can exploit Getafe and remain in the competition.”
