Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jr is feeling fatigued but will be ready for their LaLiga clash against Villarreal on Saturday, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti. The Brazilian missed team training on Friday after being granted an extra day of rest.
The Spanish giants triumphed over Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties following a challenging extra-time period in their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.
Local media reported that Vinicius opted to stay inside the club’s facilities during the team’s final training session ahead of the league encounter.
“We have given him an additional day to recover because he is still quite tired,” Ancelotti mentioned in a press conference.
“He’ll be available tomorrow and fully fit to contribute. He’s not facing any issues, just some fatigue.”
The Italian manager offered his support to the 24-year-old forward, who missed a crucial penalty late in the second half against Atletico.
“To us, Vinicius is a key player,” Ancelotti stated. “He may have his ups and downs, but that’s not something I question.”
“Regardless of whether he has an off day or misses an opportunity, his importance to this club is undeniable.”
Real Madrid has encountered some challenges in their LaLiga title defence, currently sitting second in the standings after winning just two of their last six matches.
The defending champions are level on 57 points with leaders Barcelona, who have a game in hand, and who are set to face Atletico – currently third with one point less – on Sunday. Villarreal is in fifth position.
“We need to make an extra effort tomorrow,” Ancelotti expressed.
“We can’t afford to feel fresh, given the time constraints. However, we can bring other aspects to the game: quality, a positive attitude, and an intelligent style of play… there’s more than one way to achieve victory, such as strong defending.”
He also noted that his players would require added motivation for Saturday’s match after their recent Champions League outing.
“Clearly, in terms of motivation, we need to encourage the players more for tomorrow’s match compared to the match against Atletico on Wednesday,” Ancelotti added.
“In the Champions League, motivation is inherent; for tomorrow, we’ll need to instil that additional drive.”
