In a brilliant display from Alisson Becker, Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Round of 16, with Harvey Elliott scoring a late winner. This triumph also marked the end of a five-match winless streak for the Reds in away games on French soil.
Both clubs had surged ahead with a 13-point lead in their respective domestic leagues, but it was anticipated that they would be divided by the slenderest of margins in European competition.
PSG looked sharper in the opening fifteen minutes, with Ibrahima Konaté blocking Bradley Barcola’s initial shot, while Fabián Ruiz misfired with the follow-up. Ousmane Dembele then surged forward, setting up João Neves for a strike that skidded past the crossbar, before Dembele himself saw a shot deflected behind by Virgil van Dijk.
The corner that followed wasn’t cleared effectively, and when the ball found Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, he was denied a spectacular opener by a tight offside call.
Achraf Hakimi and Kvaratskhelia both had long-range attempts saved as Les Parisiens kept the pressure on their opponents. The disbelief that the score remained level grew on the half-hour mark when Alisson rushed out to thwart Dembele, while both Szoboszlai and Barcola had chances blocked and skied respectively.
Alisson then made another outstanding save to deny Kvaratskhelia, ensuring the scores were still level at half-time. Following the break, the Brazilian keeper remained vigilant, tipping a free-kick wide and catching a curling shot from the Georgian forward. Hakimi later lost his footing as he shot over the bar, with the Reds clearing several dangerous moments in their box.
On the other side, Liverpool struggled to create meaningful chances, with Mohamed Salah failing to make an impact against Nuno Mendes, while Darwin Nunez nearly forced a breakthrough after his introduction by Arne Slot, testing keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG substitute Desire Doue was the next to challenge Alisson, who also managed to divert a curling effort from Dembélé.
Finally, after withstanding heavy pressure, Liverpool found the net when Nunez assisted Elliott, who scored with his first touch just 47 seconds after coming on, giving the Reds a crucial advantage to take back to Anfield.
In the process, they halted PSG’s impressive 22-match unbeaten run and their remarkable 20-match scoring streak across all competitions.
