Go Ahead Eagles’ manager, Paul Simonis, has confirmed the extension of his contract with the Eredivisie club after a groundbreaking season.
Simonis, alongside his coaching staff, has agreed to a one-year extension, prolonging their contracts until June 2027.
“I am extremely pleased about this,” Simonis stated on the club’s official website. “I’m thoroughly enjoying my time at this wonderful club. This proposal from the club reflects their immense trust and appreciation for us.”
The 40-year-old Simonis is reportedly a candidate for the managerial role at Ajax. Following the departure of Italian coach Francesco Farioli last Monday, less than a day after his side relinquished the Eredivisie title to PSV, Ajax may now need to reconsider their options with Simonis’ contract extension.
Simonis arrived at the club in the summer of 2024, marking the beginning of his managerial career. The former assistant at Heerenveen captured attention with his Go Ahead Eagles team, which displayed a contemporary and exciting style of attacking football.
Simonis earned legendary status by clinching the KNVB Beker in April, marking the club’s first major trophy in its history after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over AZ. This achievement also secured the club a place in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League next season, the first time Go Ahead Eagles will participate in European competition since the 1960s.
“We are heading into Europe with Go Ahead Eagles, which is fantastic. An exciting challenge lies ahead in the coming years!”
