This season, Australia’s A-League will once again accommodate a 90-second stoppage during matches to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan, provided the games take place after sunset.
During the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, practising Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset, which poses significant challenges for professional athletes.
Anas Ouahim, a Morocco under-23 international representing Sydney FC, remarked that this initiative, first introduced by the A-League last year, is vital for Muslim players.
“It’s certainly a challenge. Various professions require different levels of physical endurance, and as footballers, we need food and water to perform optimally,” he stated in an A-League media release.
“Breaking the fast promptly is essential, as it allows for hydration and a quick snack, like a date, to regain some energy after not eating or drinking for so long.“
With Ramadan having commenced in Australia on Thursday night, Ouahim will have the opportunity to utilise this break if he is chosen to play for Sydney FC against Macarthur on Saturday.
“For professional athletes, having this chance is incredibly advantageous,” added the German-born former FC Koln player.
“It enables me to fulfil my religious practices while continuing to engage in the sport I am passionate about, and I’ve found a harmonious balance that suits me well.“
