This week on Total A-Leagues, Sydney Morning Herald journalist Vince Rugari and former Socceroo Tommy Oar delved into the calibre of coaches within the Isuzu UTE A-League and speculated on who might make a move overseas.
Could it be Steve Corica? John Aloisi? Ufuk Talay? Mark Jackson? Are we on the brink of seeing an Isuzu UTE A-League head coach enticed by offers from abroad?
Aussie football icon and two-time A-League champion Ange Postecoglou is certainly making waves internationally. Following his triumphs in both the NSL and Isuzu UTE A-League, this legendary manager has secured titles with the Socceroos, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Celtic, and is now endeavouring to end the trophy drought at Premier League side Tottenham.

Meanwhile, both Kevin Muscat (Shanghai Port) and ex-Socceroos coach Graham Arnold have made notable impressions after moving on from the A-Leagues. Peter Cklamovski recently took charge of the Malaysian national team, while Joe Montemurro is making strides with Lyon Women. We can’t forget Arthur Papas, formerly of the Newcastle Jets, who is now leading J1 League club Cerezo Osaka, alongside Central Coast Mariners legend John Hutchinson at Jubilo Iwata. Others like Ross Aloisi, Vincenzo Ierardo, Nick Montgomery, and Mile Jedinak are also thriving in assistant coaching roles abroad.
When we examine the current Isuzu UTE A-League landscape, Mark Jackson of Central Coast Mariners has just experienced an unprecedented treble-winning season, while Socceroos hero John Aloisi has revitalised Western United following their 2022 Championship win, and the three-time champion Corica is at the helm of Auckland FC’s groundbreaking debut season.
GAME-BY-GAME PREVIEW: Essential insights for Round 18 of the Isuzu UTE A-League
On this week’s Total A-Leagues segment, Rugari and Oar were prompted to share their thoughts on whether A-Leagues coaches would attract interest from overseas clubs at the season’s conclusion.
“One name that came up in last week’s discussion was Steve Corica, and his track record speaks volumes about his success,” Oar remarked.
“Another individual who often flies under the radar is John Aloisi. His long-standing presence in the league and the excellent job he’s done this season is noteworthy.”
Rugari added, referencing Aloisi’s experiences abroad with clubs such as Portsmouth and Coventry: “He has a strong reputation, perhaps more robust than we acknowledge here, especially in Europe and Spain.”
Oar, who mentioned Sydney FC’s Ufuk Talay as another potential candidate, contended: “He already has an established reputation as a player. Given the financial strength in Asia, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
“Those are the top contenders I see possibly progressing to new opportunities by season’s end.”
“If you had asked me at the start of the season, Ufuk Talay would have been included as well, but his season has had some hiccups, making the timing less than ideal. Nevertheless, I still see them as the three standout candidates.”
Rugari concurred, particularly noting Corica’s connections in Japan as a former player, saying, “He has often expressed a desire to coach in Japan. After he won what I believe was either his first or second title, he mentioned that ambition. Given that Japanese clubs are recruiting coaches of Arthur Papas’ and John Hutchinson’s calibre, it wouldn’t be a shock; Corica’s coaching record is more impressive in terms of trophies won.”
“Mark Jackson is also a wild card given his remarkable success last season, perhaps achieving the best single-season result by an A-League club.”
“The only other season that might come close would be one of the Roarcelona seasons, but Jackson’s triple trophy achievement positions him uniquely. Plus, given his English background, he has connections that could assist in his future prospects.”

“Following Nick Montgomery’s successful transition to the SPL from the Mariners, something similar wouldn’t surprise me in Jackson’s case,” Oar shared. “I find his approach very refreshing—transparent in his operations, and you know what to expect from him, which speaks volumes about his clear standards.”
