The Highlanders’ formidable Timoci Tavatavanawai was at it again, claiming yet another victim, although it was the Hurricanes who emerged victorious in a nail-biting 20-18 Super Rugby Pacific match in Dunedin on Friday night.
Highlanders fullback Sam Gilbert had a last-minute opportunity to snatch a thrilling win for his side, but his drop goal attempt after the final siren drifted wide to the left.
Highlanders captain Tavatavanawai voiced his concerns to referee Angus Mabey regarding a high tackle by Hurricanes centre Peter Umaga-Jensen in the build-up play, but his objections went unheeded.
This win awarded the Hurricanes—last year’s minor premiers—an important four points, moving them off the bottom of the table to seventh place for the time being as they head into their bye week with a record of 2-3.
All Blacks stars Cam Roigard and Ruben Love each scored a try for the Hurricanes, alongside winger Kini Naholo.
Sevens star Caleb Tangitau maintained his impressive form with a spectacular intercept try, while Ajay Faleafaga also crossed the line for the Highlanders, who now sit at 2-2.
The Highlanders sported The Incredible Hulk kit while the Hurricanes showcased Captain America gear, as both New Zealand teams partnered with comic book publisher Marvel for the kids’ round.
Tavatavanawai displayed his superhero-like strength in the first half, sending Hurricanes winger Ngatungane Punivai crashing to the ground during a tackle.
Punivai appeared to lose consciousness briefly on the immaculate Forsyth Barr Stadium turf, and upon regaining awareness, he faced another setback with the referee brandishing a yellow card at him.

Punivai was unable to return after being assessed under the HIA protocols and was replaced by Fehi Fineanganofo.
“It’s unfortunate with him going off, but there was foul play involved,” Mabey stated to Hurricanes co-captain Du’Plessis Kirifi.
“He was always upright, leading to head contact. It met the threshold for a yellow card.”

Former All Blacks skipper Justin Marshall concurred that the decision was appropriate.
“Definitely shoulder to head,” Marshall commented during the Stan Sport coverage.
“The current laws dictate that the defender must make a genuine effort to get lower than the ball carrier. Ngatungane Punivai did not comply with this, leading to head contact.

“Indeed, he was at fault there. While he’s the one leaving the pitch, it’s his responsibility to ensure safety,” Marshall stated.
“According to the rules, he did not take the necessary measures to protect himself. Unfortunately, he not only leaves the field due to a head injury but also receives a yellow card. That’s the law, and players are aware of it. Regardless of personal opinions, it is what it is.”
Tavatavanawai has been leaving a path of destruction this season.
Marshall has urged for the 27-year-old Fijian to be selected for the All Blacks’ squad to play against France in July.
Marshall likened Tavatavanawai to “Ma’a Nonu on steroids,” as the All Blacks great is considered one of the finest centres in rugby history, similar to Tavatavanawai, who also transitioned from wing to centre, utilising his powerful physique.
Final Score: Hurricanes 20 (Kini Naholo, Cam Roigard, Ruben Love tries; Harry Godfrey con, pen) Highlanders 18 (Caleb Tangitau, Ajay Faleafaga tries; Sam Gilbert con, 2 pens). Half-Time: 8-11
