Brighton chairman Tony Bloom has secured a 19.1% share in Melbourne Victory, with the possibility of increasing his stake in the future, as announced by the Australian club on Thursday.
Bloom, a professional poker player, also owns Premier League team Brighton and has investments in Belgian top-flight club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 54-year-old English businessman acquired Brighton in 2009, transforming them into a stable Premier League side known for their savvy transfer dealings.
“My investment signifies my confidence in the club’s vision and leadership,” Bloom, whose wife hails from Australia, stated in a release from the A-League club.
“I recognise incredible potential for further growth and success at the club, both on and off the field.”
John Dovaston, chairman of Melbourne Victory, remarked that Bloom’s “extensive experience and expertise in football are well acknowledged, with Brighton and Hove Albion being considered among the best-managed teams in the EPL.”
He added: “Although this investment is separate from Tony’s other football pursuits, we believe that utilising his network at Brighton and beyond will significantly contribute to Melbourne Victory’s advancement and provide a stronger capital foundation.”
Melbourne Victory has clinched the A-League title four times, their most recent victory occurring in 2018.
