Paris Saint-Germain’s skipper Marquinhos has stressed that there are “no limits” to what the French side can achieve in this season’s Champions League following their penalty shootout victory over Liverpool in the Round of 16.
“It was an outstanding performance. We absolutely deserved to progress over the two legs, no question about it,” Marquinhos remarked to Canal Plus after PSG triumphed 4-1 in the shootout, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
After trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Paris last week, PSG struck first on the night with Ousmane Dembele’s goal, bringing the aggregate score level.
With neither side able to find the net in the 90 minutes plus extra time, the match headed to penalties, where PSG’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves against both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.
The visitors converted all their penalties successfully, with Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, and Dembele all netting before Desire Doue sealed their advancement.
While PSG have often exited the Champions League at this stage over the last decade, Marquinhos highlighted the importance of the date, recalling their memorable last-16 victories on March 11 against Chelsea in 2015 and Borussia Dortmund in 2020.
“It’s March 11, the anniversary of our wins over Chelsea here in England and Dortmund as well, so it’s every five years. It’s a special day for us,” expressed the Brazilian defender.
“Winning here with such a young team, likely one of the youngest in the Champions League, speaks volumes. The coach and staff have done an incredible job, and I’m genuinely delighted.”
PSG are set to face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarter-finals. Marquinhos, who has been at PSG since 2013, concluded, “We have no limits to what we can achieve, but there’s always room for improvement; we can’t stop here.
“This was only a last-16 match, even though it felt like it could have been a final. A lot of work lies ahead.“
