Billy Slater has expressed his belief that unwanted Roosters hooker Brandon Smith could depart before the end of his contract, potentially signing with a rival club midway through 2025.
Currently, Smith is recovering from a knee injury and is not anticipated to return until at least June. However, Roosters management has already informed him that he won’t be re-signed for the next season after securing State of Origin star Reece Robson.
There’s speculation linking Smith with a transfer to fierce rivals South Sydney, yet no formal announcements have been made regarding his long-term prospects.
In the interim, Slater, a former teammate at Storm, believes that Smith could significantly elevate a team in need of an X-factor leading into the finals.

“With the recruitment of Reece Robson for next season, it’s clear that Brandon’s time at the Roosters is limited,” the Queensland coach shared on Nine’s The Billy Slater Podcast.
“It wouldn’t be surprising if a club approached the Roosters with a proposal for Brandon this year. Depending on their position in July, they may want to create some salary cap space.
“Brandon Smith could be an advantageous acquisition for a team vying for a top-eight finish or a premiership. He’s already tasted success in finals and knows what it takes to perform at that level.
“Having him join a club chasing a premiership could be a significant uplift.”

The 28-year-old has faced challenges with both performance and injuries since joining the Roosters, yet he remains a formidable player when at his best.
Slater also showed sympathy for the Kiwi star, who is managing both his rehabilitation and a very public contract dispute.

“I can only imagine how challenging it must be for him,” Slater commented.
“Recovering from a knee reconstruction is tough enough, but having to prepare to play for a club that has declared their intent not to keep you is an even greater hurdle.
“This is a particularly difficult time for any player, and Brandon is facing that challenge.
“He’s striving to recover from his injury and return to play for the Roosters while also searching for a new club for the following year.
“I believe that resolving his situation sooner rather than later will alleviate some pressure, allowing him to focus on his football.”Â
