Juventus head coach Thiago Motta expressed his distress after his side suffered a staggering 4-0 home defeat to Atalanta on Sunday, a significant setback to their faint ambitions of clinching the Serie A title.
This loss brought an abrupt end to Juventus’s five-match winning streak in the league, leaving them in fourth place with 52 points, a daunting nine points adrift of table-toppers Inter Milan. The season has been particularly disappointing for the club, having already been eliminated from both the Champions League and the Coppa Italia.
“Atalanta truly earned this victory, and we were aware of how they intended to play,” Motta stated to the press.
“Today, our disappointment is palpable, and I anticipate a restless night. Everything influences us because we are Juventus. The supporters, much like the media, have every right to express their opinions.”
“The facts indicate our current standing. This team has substantial potential for improvement. We struggled significantly after conceding the first goal. We’re understandably upset, and now we must refocus for the next match.”
It’s worth noting that Juventus hadn’t experienced a Serie A home defeat by four or more goals since 1967. However, Motta commented that last month’s 4-2 penalty loss to Empoli in the Italian Cup quarter-finals was a more bitter pill to swallow.
“This is a loss we aren’t fond of, but I don’t equate it to the defeat against Empoli,” he declared. “They are distinct circumstances. We should have maintained our composure, but that was partly due to a lack of experience within the squad.”
Next up, Juventus will face Fiorentina on Sunday.
