Jarryd Hayne is on the verge of making a return to rugby league, but the two-time Dally M Medal winner acknowledges that a comeback to the NRL is still a long shot.
The 37-year-old recently signed with the Wentworthville Magpies to compete in the Ron Massey Cup, the division just below reserve grade in New South Wales.
Since 2018, Hayne has been sidelined after being convicted of sexual assault, resulting in a two-year prison sentence. He was released in 2024 following a successful appeal.
By linking up with the Magpies, who support a NSW Cup side, there is a potential pathway for the Parramatta Eels legend to return to the top tier.
However, in a recent interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Hayne expressed his understanding of the slim chances involved, stating that his main goal is now to represent Fiji.

“A fairytale scenario would be a return to the NRL,” he remarked.
“But I must be realistic. The chances of that happening are very slim, and it’s not where my focus lies.
“What I want is to get back on the field and play in front of my kids.
“I also aspire to represent Fiji in Test matches later this year, with upcoming games against Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands. That is my objective.
“Having been away from the game for such an extended period, it’s about acclimatising to the physicality again.

“When you’re actively playing and being hit regularly… after time away, regardless of previous experience, your body takes considerable time to readjust to that level of impact.
“My goal is to work towards playing for Fiji, but it all begins with getting my body fit and having a successful year with Wentworthville.”
Throughout his rugby league career, Hayne was a standout at every level, notably helping the NSW Blues break a long-standing losing streak in the State of Origin series over a decade ago.

Throughout his illustrious career, Hayne scored an impressive 121 tries across 214 first-grade matches for the Eels and the Titans, along with a short stint in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.
More recently, Hayne participated in the Nines Premier League in January, but a hamstring injury has raised doubts about his upcoming debut with the Magpies.
The Wentworthville Magpies will commence their Ron Massey Cup season against Ryde-Eastwood next Saturday at Ringrose Park.
