Tottenham Hotspur’s defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could be set to make their long-awaited return in Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth, following weeks of recovery from thigh injuries, according to manager Ange Postecoglou.
Both Van de Ven and Romero were included in the travelling squad for Thursday’s Europa League round of 16 first-leg match against AZ Alkmaar. However, Postecoglou opted not to play them during the 1-0 defeat, citing concerns over the subpar pitch conditions at the Dutch venue.
“After seeing the pitch the night before, I made up my mind not to risk them in that game,” he told reporters on Friday.
“The surface was not ideal, not steady underfoot, and it wasn’t a match where I felt their presence was crucial. But with a few extra days of training and recovery, I’m hopeful that both will be ready to play against Bournemouth.”

Postecoglou expressed optimism regarding Dominic Solanke’s swift recovery after the England forward was substituted just 20 minutes into his return from a knee injury sustained in January.
“It’s too early to provide a clear update. Dom took a knock to the knee, so he’s likely feeling some soreness, but it’s just a minor issue, so we hope it settles quickly,” the Australian coach stated.
Wales defender Ben Davies may also be in contention for a return this Sunday after sustaining an injury last month, Postecoglou indicated.
The manager acknowledged that the team’s injury troubles have impacted their inconsistent performances in the Premier League, with Spurs currently sitting in 13th after enduring a seven-match winless run from December to January, before securing three consecutive victories last month.
“Our inconsistency largely stems from not having a settled lineup… last night was indicative of our current situation,” he said.
“We definitely require another match to reach the level we aspire to. The disappointment from last night should be rectified with a positive result this weekend… I remain eager for us to climb the league table.”
