Southampton manager Ivan Juric addressed the media ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with league leaders Liverpool.
With Southampton currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League standings, Juric faces an uphill battle as his team prepares to confront a Liverpool side that appears to be in formidable form. After reassuring that all his players are “all fine,” he shifted the conversation to persistent speculation suggesting he may not continue as Southampton’s manager beyond the season.
“It’s a standard situation for any manager. When results aren’t forthcoming, doubts arise. I’m accustomed to this. As I always say, I focus on the present; my thoughts are on Liverpool, not on what the future holds,” he stated.
When asked about his expectations for the final 11 matches of the season, which might see his side relegated well before the season’s conclusion, Juric responded.
“I expect us to improve significantly compared to our last two outings. We had a particularly poor performance against Chelsea, despite showing some positive moments. I certainly don’t wish to relive the Brighton match – that remains my worst coaching experience,” he reflected.
One silver lining heading into the match against manager Arne Slot’s side is the home advantage at St Mary’s Stadium, where Juric insists his players must elevate their game to secure three points.
“It hasn’t been good enough. There have been numerous situations, and reflecting on my role, I feel unsatisfied. I expected considerably more from us. We’ve only accumulated nine points – that’s a collective shortcoming. Right now, it’s essential to focus on finishing the season strongly, and we’ll see what unfolds,”
he emphasised.
Juric also reached out to Southampton fans, many of whom fear the team is already doomed following a disappointing campaign thus far.
“They are wonderful supporters. I’ve never seen anything like it – even when we’re at the bottom of the table, they continue to back us. Their optimism and positivity are truly appreciated, and I would like to thank them wholeheartedly,” he expressed.
He then discussed Tyler Dibling, who has been linked with various Premier League clubs eager to acquire him when the summer transfer window opens.
“Dibling is an exceptional talent at just 18 years old, and we’ll consider what’s best for him once the season concludes. Ultimately, he’ll make the decision,” Juric noted.
Finally, he shared his thoughts on facing Liverpool, affirming that he maintains an optimistic outlook before every match because of the unpredictable nature of football.
“They play outstanding football, and we recognise the challenge ahead. We’ll put forth our best effort and see how it goes. Before the match, I always approach it with optimism; afterwards, my feelings may change. I always see the chance to achieve something positive,”
he concluded.
