Harry Kane expressed that his two goals during Wednesday’s 3-0 triumph over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 were “probably” the most significant so far for Bayern Munich.
The forward’s early ninth-minute header and a penalty in the second half established Bayern’s dominance in the tie, paving the way for next week’s return match against the German champions and putting them on course for the quarter-finals.
At 31 years of age, Kane is yet to secure a major trophy in his career, having failed to claim any silverware last season, his inaugural year at Bayern. However, he has kept the team’s aspirations alive for a shot at the final in Munich this May.
When asked if those goals were his most crucial yet, Kane replied: “Probably, I’d say so.”
He added, “We were aware of the anticipation surrounding this match. We maintained our composure, and I stayed focused.
“Scoring early was great, and then getting the second one really capped it off – but, as always, my eyes are set on the next challenge.”
Kane has notched up 75 goals in 79 matches across all competitions since making the move to Bayern from Spurs in the summer of 2023.
Before Wednesday’s fixture, Bayern had never managed to defeat Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, with three draws and three losses to their name.
Bayern’s manager, Vincent Kompany, dismissed any notions that their victory sent a strong message in the competition.
“There are no messages. It’s all about focusing on the next game,” he commented.
One concerning issue for the German giants was an injury to captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had to be substituted and was replaced by 21-year-old debutant Jonas Urbig.
Kompany stated that he was uncertain about Neuer’s availability in the coming days but expressed confidence in the squad’s depth.
“It’s unfortunate for us, but I’ve mentioned before our squad’s strength. Whether it’s Urbig, it’s Urbig, and we won’t dwell on it for a moment,” he told DAZN.
