Nigeria faces a significant challenge as they prepare for the March 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, with Semi Ajayi set to miss out due to injury.
The West Bromwich Albion defender sustained a hamstring injury during his team’s 2-0 triumph over Oxford United at The Hawthorns on February 22.
Having established an early lead thanks to Alex Mowatt in the 11th minute, Ajayi was forced off the pitch in the 41st minute, making way for Jamaica’s Mason Holgate.
“Albion confirms that Semi Ajayi will be out of action for several weeks following a hamstring injury,” stated the club’s official website.
“The central defender was substituted in the 41st minute during last weekend’s victory against Oxford United.
“He will now commence a rehabilitation programme and aims to make a return before the end of the season. Everyone at the club wishes Semi a swift recovery.”
Manager Eric Chelle is keen to secure wins in the upcoming matches to revive the country’s dwindling hopes of qualification for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Super Eagles currently find themselves in fifth place in Group C, having collected just three points from four matches.
Ajayi joined West Brom from Rotherham United in July 2019 for an undisclosed fee and has since celebrated 169 league appearances with the five-time FA Cup winners.
This injury not only hampers Nigeria’s prospects but also undermines West Bromwich Albion’s aspirations to return to the English Premier League.
“It’s disappointing for him, and it’s frustrating for us,” Mowbray expressed to BBC Radio WM.
“He possesses all the attributes to be an exceptional player and has the confidence in his ability to defend, which allows us to adopt a higher defensive line in recent matches and keep the opposition at bay.
“He will be missed, but we’re focusing on moving forward with the fit players. We wish Semi a rapid recovery.”
