Emma Raducanu’s emotional departure from the Dubai Tennis Championships has been clarified, following an incident involving a man displaying “fixated behaviour” prior to the 2021 US Open winner seeking assistance from the umpire amid distress.
During her second-round match against Karolina Muchova, Raducanu was seen hiding behind the umpire’s chair before approaching it, visibly upset and using the chair for comfort as she cried.
The 28-year-old Muchova offered support to her 22-year-old opponent, attempting to console her in that moment of vulnerability.
Raducanu later dried her tears with a towel before continuing the match.

Despite facing a double break, Raducanu managed to fight back to force a tiebreak, ultimately losing 7-6(6), 6-4 after two hours and four minutes.
She had a set point in the first set but was unable to convert it.
Throughout the match, Raducanu did not seem to be suffering from any physical injury, and the absence of microphones courtside made it challenging to determine the cause of her distress.
“Unfortunately, we cannot overhear what’s occurring, but it doesn’t appear to be good,” stated commentator Candy Reid at the time.
“She seems to be in tears, which is very concerning.
“Something has clearly upset her, and I’m not sure what it is. Karolina Muchova, known for her sportsmanship on the WTA tour, is just there comforting her opponent.
“Seeing a player in tears on court is heart-wrenching; this game should be enjoyable.”

Later on Wednesday, the WTA released a statement revealing that Raducanu’s distress was prompted by the inappropriate actions of a man in the audience, who has since been removed from the venue.
“Emma Raducanu was approached in a public space by an individual displaying fixated behaviour,” the organisation announced on platform X.
“This person was identified in the front rows during Emma’s match on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and was subsequently ejected.
“He will be prohibited from attending all WTA events while a threat assessment is conducted.
“The safety of our players is paramount, and tournaments are advised on security protocols for international sporting events. The WTA is actively collaborating with Emma and her team to ensure her safety and offer any support she may need.
“We are committed to working with tournaments and their security teams worldwide to uphold a secure environment for all players.”
Raducanu’s emotional breakdown raised significant concerns across social media in the hours following her departure, but the young star has yet to make a public statement regarding the incident.
