Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that David Moyes is having a more successful impact at Everton than the struggling Manchester United manager has managed during his brief tenure at Old Trafford.
The two managers will clash on Saturday as Amorim aims to steer United away from their alarming downturn in form.
Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, the former Sporting Lisbon coach has recorded only four victories and suffered eight defeats in the Premier League.
In contrast, Moyes, who was dismissed by United in 2014 after a brief stint, has already equalled Amorim’s win tally after just six league matches since his return to Everton in January.
Currently, Everton sit in 14th place, one spot above United, who are languishing in 15th, as the clubs prepare for their final encounter at Goodison Park before Everton relocates to a new stadium next season.
When questioned about Everton’s turnaround under new management compared to United’s situation, Amorim stated: “It’s quite straightforward. David Moyes is simply doing a better job than I am.“
“Winning even one or two matches builds that belief. The pressure they face is also quite different.“
“I believe we need to recognise the efforts of Everton’s players, particularly the manager, and that’s all there is to it. We must strive to achieve the same.“
Amorim’s honest comments come as no surprise, given he has already acknowledged that both Erik ten Hag and the current interim manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy—now at Leicester—have performed better during their time at the club this season.
Moyes was let go by United after just ten months, following a 2-0 defeat at Everton, and another loss this weekend could further increase the pressure on Amorim, whose methods are said to have left some players sceptical.
“I don’t sense that in training,” Amorim remarked. “While our performance in matches might suggest otherwise, I’m not overly concerned about it.“
“If the players aren’t convinced, I’m not picking up on that. It’s my responsibility to shift their perspectives, and I’m quite adept at doing that.“
Amorim has no regrets about taking the role he initially intended to wait for until the summer, which would have allowed him to complete the season with Sporting and begin anew.
“This is obvious; it’s common sense. Starting a season is an entirely different proposition.“
“You have time to reflect, to understand the players, to conduct a pre-season, and to implement any changes deemed necessary within the team or squad. That part is clear.“
“That decision was made, so I don’t want to speak in those terms. I had my reasons for delaying and equally important ones for accepting the role.“
“I understood the challenges and risks involved. I am aware of that, but it’s Manchester United, and turning it down was not an option.“
When asked if he ever questioned his choice to join United, he responded: “No, we make a choice and we fully commit to it. Admittedly, there are times when it can be incredibly frustrating.“
