Auckland FC has announced the extension of captain Hiroki Sakai’s contract, securing the Japan international for an additional year, which sees him remain with the club until the conclusion of the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The 34-year-old right-back has been essential in Auckland’s successful campaign this season, contributing significantly to the Black Knights’ impressive defensive record, which has seen them keep nine clean sheets and concede only 12 goals—the best in the league.

Sakai has featured in 12 matches for Auckland this season. Notably, in the club’s inaugural encounter against Brisbane Roar, Sakai’s delivery resulted in an own goal from Roar defender Harry Van Der Saag, marking the club’s first-ever Isuzu UTE A-League goal. He has also netted once and provided an assist in his dynamic role down Auckland’s right flank.
After signing his new one-year deal, Sakai expressed that he couldn’t fathom life outside Auckland while reflecting on his immediate future.
“My family and I have settled in really well in Auckland,” Sakai remarked.
“It’s a beautiful city; we feel at home and the support we’ve received has been incredible. This team is fantastic as well. I love playing alongside my teammates and performing in front of our fans – their passion and backing is unparalleled.”
“I try not to look too far ahead, especially with so much to achieve in the coming months, but leaving at the end of the season just doesn’t cross my mind.”
With 74 caps for Japan, Sakai has represented his nation in two FIFA World Cups and two Olympic Games. At the club level, he has nearly 150 appearances for French powerhouse Marseille and enjoyed a 96-game spell at Hannover 96 in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Holding one of the most impressive résumés in the Isuzu UTE A-League, Sakai’s contract extension represents a significant coup for both Auckland and head coach Steve Corica, who expressed his satisfaction at retaining the club’s captain for another season.
“Despite his quality, he is an incredibly humble individual,” said head coach Steve Corica.
“He’s a fantastic professional, a great mentor for the younger players, and is well-respected by everyone associated with the club.”
“On the pitch, he is exceptional. He covers an immense amount of ground and possesses outstanding technical skills. We all recall his last-ditch tackle against Melbourne Victory.”
“Having Hiroki with us for at least another season is fantastic news for both the team and the fans who relish witnessing his performances week in and week out.”
Sakai and Auckland will next take to the field on Saturday afternoon for the third chapter of the New Zealand Derby this season.
Auckland is aiming to claim their third consecutive victory over the Phoenix in this local rivalry.
