Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has finally addressed his decision to step down from his role following this year’s Rugby Championship.
Rugby Australia had hoped the Kiwi mentor would remain on board until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, but Schmidt has prioritised spending more time with his family.
His wife, Kellie, and their son, Luke, who suffers from severe epilepsy, reside in Taupo.

“To start with, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time, it’s been a tremendous opportunity,” Schmidt shared with Stan Sport’s Morgan Turinui on Friday night.
“It has been a true privilege, and the players and staff have made this whirlwind experience incredibly enjoyable.
“While it’s disappointing for me, I recognise that it’s a commitment I need to honour.”

Schmidt’s original contract was set to conclude after the British and Irish Lions tour in August, but he has opted to extend it until October.
“I recognised that completing our duties after facing the Lions, within six days of travelling to Jo’burg to play against the Springboks, wouldn’t be the most ideal transition period. Thus, finishing at the end of the TRC seems to be a reasonable compromise. I’m eager to witness the boys in action against the Lions and to collaborate with them once more.”
Schmidt acknowledged the challenge posed by the upcoming Lions series.
“I’m apprehensive about what we might encounter, knowing their capabilities,” expressed the former Ireland coach.
“Many of the players are familiar to me, having coached several of the Lions squad members, so I’m aware of their talent and depth.
“Nevertheless, I’m beginning to gather more insights about our players as well. Our strengths are surfacing, and I hope we can identify additional depth through Super Rugby this season.”
When Turinui inquired about Schmidt’s expectations for Australia’s players in Super Rugby this season, he replied,
“A key focus for us is ensuring they are actively engaged in the game, recognising plays early, moving early, and positioning themselves where the team requires them,” he stated.
“We also aim to establish repeatable behaviours concerning ball handling and supporting each other during breakdowns, enhancing skill elements such as passing quality.
“Their ability to create space in their kicking game and improve catching proficiency is essential given the competitive nature of catches now. This is another aspect we need to develop.”
