Melbourne may face the start of their AFL season without their dependable defender, Judd McVee, due to a hamstring injury. The young backman is expected to be out for up to eight weeks after sustaining a high-grade hamstring strain during a training session.
The Demons announced on Thursday that the 21-year-old will be required to rest for between six to eight weeks. He showed visible signs of pain as he was assisted off the field by two staff members before being transported in a medicab.
If McVee’s recovery takes the full eight weeks, he would miss the first games of the season and wouldn’t be back until Melbourne meets Essendon at Adelaide Oval during Gather Round.
“Judd was enjoying a solid pre-season prior to his injury, making this setback particularly disappointing,” said Melbourne’s football director, Alan Richardson.
“He will undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation programme under the watchful eye of our medical and high-performance teams, and we are optimistic about him returning early in the season.”

“Judd is a dedicated professional who approaches every challenge with a positive attitude, and we are confident he will channel that same mindset into his rehabilitation.”
Over the past two seasons, McVee has been a trusted figure in the Demons’ defensive lineup, making 48 appearances.
Melbourne will kick off its premiership campaign against GWS at the MCG on March 16.
