Gold Coast supporters may still be feeling uncertain, but talented midfielder Matt Rowell responded with “I think so” when questioned about his potential decision to rebuff strong Victorian interest and extend his contract with the Suns.
Collingwood, Essendon, and Geelong have all been engaged in talks with Rowell’s management team as they attempt to bring the 2019 No.1 draft pick back to his home state, as per The Age.
Rowell has found himself in a fascinating scenario as a member of the Suns’ leadership group, despite not having a long-term contract with the club.
The 23-year-old is signed with the Suns only until 2025.
“Right now, I’m not concerned about the [contract] situation. My focus is on training effectively and preparing for the season. I am dedicated to the Suns and looking forward to the upcoming season,” Rowell stated on Monday.
When asked if his commitment hinted at a probable contract renewal with Gold Coast, Rowell was measured in his response.
“I think so. That will unfold when the time comes,” he said.
“At the moment, my focus is solely on the upcoming season and winning our first match.”

Rowell mentioned that there was no set timeframe for re-signing and he refrained from discussing the meetings he has reportedly had with the Magpies, Bombers, and Cats.
He also expressed confidence that his current contract uncertainty has not been a distraction for himself or the club.
Recently, Rowell was named as one of six players in the leadership group, joining new captain Noah Anderson, vice-captains Touk Miller and Sam Collins, Wil Powell, and Ben King.
Both Rowell and Anderson attended Melbourne’s Carey Baptist Grammar School before making their way to the Suns through the top two picks of the 2019 draft.
“Noah and I share a really special bond,” Rowell remarked. “I’m thrilled he’s become captain now and I’m eager to support him. I believe he has the potential to be an exceptional captain for our football club … I’m looking forward to another season alongside him.”
Although the Suns have yet to make an appearance in the finals after 14 seasons in the AFL, Rowell is optimistic about how the club could perform under Damien Hardwick’s second season as coach.
“We aim for success this year, we want to reach the finals and establish ourselves as a serious football team, so that when opponents face us, they know it’s going to be a fierce contest,” Rowell declared.
“This year, I want to embrace a more significant leadership role, and I am genuinely excited about being part of the leadership group. With Noah as our new captain, I believe I can offer him strong support.”
