Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence (24) expressed his belief in his capacity to prevent Mohamed Salah (32) from finding the back of the net as Spurs head into the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Liverpool with a 1-0 advantage on Thursday.
Over the past two months, Spence has hit his stride within Ange Postecoglou’s squad, which has been plagued by injuries. He played a crucial role in the initial leg of their victory in January, and now he is determined to aid his team in securing a spot in the final.
The situation for Tottenham has been challenging, with their defence taking significant hits, as Radu Dragusin faces a likely season-ending ACL injury, while Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and Micky van de Ven are also unavailable.
“I have confidence in my abilities against anyone. (Salah) is an exceptional player and in excellent form, but it’s all about neutralising what he excels at,” Spence stated to reporters on Tuesday.
Salah currently tops the Premier League scoring chart with 21 goals, leading Manchester City’s Erling Haaland by two.
After enduring a rough patch of only one win in their last 11 league matches, Spurs managed to turn things around with an important 2-0 victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.
The pressure is ramping up on Postecoglou, as the north London club finds itself languishing in 14th place in the league standings.
“It’s been tough, but we are fighting for the manager, we are fighting for the club, and we all believe in his vision,” Spence remarked.
He emphasised that confidence will be essential for reversing Spurs’ fortunes.
“We need to stay confident and be prepared to throw ourselves into the battle. Hopefully, we can secure our place in the final.”
