Canberra will continue its tradition of welcoming Super League imports in 2025, with the addition of one of the most promising young forwards England has produced in recent times.
Since the legendary Ricky Stuart assumed the role of head coach over ten years ago, the Raiders have successfully recruited top-tier talent from the UK rugby league.
Players like Josh Hodgson, Elliott Whitehead, John Bateman, and George Williams have all made significant contributions during their tenures in the capital.
Most recently, middle-forward Morgan Smithies made the transition and participated in all 24 matches for the Green Machine last season, narrowly missing out on the finals.

This year, Stuart has secured another English recruit, and indications suggest he could be the best yet, provided he successfully adapts to the Australian format of the game.
Matty Nicholson excelled with the Warrington Wolves last season, playing a critical role in propelling the team into the top-four alongside several former NRL stars such as Matt Dufty and Paul Vaughan.
The 21-year-old has since inked a three-year contract with the Raiders, and having already earned two caps for England, he is poised to be a highly valuable addition.
In a recent interview with Wide World of Sports, back-rower Hudson Young expressed admiration for Nicholson’s acclimatisation during the pre-season.
“He struggled with the heat at first, but he’s adjusting nicely now,” Young commented.
“He adds another dimension to our second-row options and we’ve perhaps been a bit light in that area for a couple of years.”

“Elliott Whitehead has been outstanding for the club, and it’s unfortunate to see him depart, but that’s part of footy. Matty will bring youthful energy, and he’s been training impressively,” Young added.
“I’m eager to see how he performs.”
Nicholson has scored 19 tries in 57 appearances, showcasing a commendable strike rate for an edge forward, while also establishing himself as a formidable presence in defence.
While he may not be the largest forward in the league, Nicholson has received high praise from Sam Burgess, arguably the finest export from the UK in rugby league history, following his departure from Warrington.
“I believe he’ll excel,” Burgess said during an interview with SEN Radio in December.
“He’s still very young at just 21, an exceptional athlete, fit, and has a great understanding of the game. I’m excited for him to head over and succeed.”

Raiders captain Joseph Tapine is equally enthusiastic about Nicholson’s prospects.
“He’s a fantastic bloke, and the English players always warm right up to the Canberra lads – it’s as if he’s been here forever,” stated the new skipper.
“Matty brings significant skill and a solid year in first grade will help him settle into the NRL system smoothly.
“He’s entered the group with a strong presence, and I’m excited to see how he performs this year.”
Nicholson is anticipated to pair up with Young in the back-row as the Raiders commence their season against the Warriors in Las Vegas on March 2.
