Czech skier Tereza Nova has recently endured brain surgery and is now in a medically induced coma, following a harrowing crash during her training for the World Cup women’s downhill event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The Czech Ski Federation reported that Nova required surgery to alleviate brain swelling at a hospital in nearby Murnau after falling during her final training session on the Kandahar course on Friday.
The federation added that Nova “will remain in the medically induced coma for as long as the medical team deems necessary.”
This incident marks just one of several crashes that have dominated the alpine skiing headlines in recent weeks.
Austrian skier Nina Ortlieb also suffered a fractured right leg from a high-speed crash at the same venue as Nova.

In other news, French skiers Alexis Pinturault and Florian Loriot were both injured and required airlifting off the slopes on Friday.
During the men’s events held in Kitzbuehel, Austria, Pinturault, Loriot, and Italy’s Dominik Paris also had to be airlifted after separate accidents.

Last month, reigning Kitzbuehel downhill champion Cyprien Sarrazin suffered serious internal bleeding on the brain following a catastrophic crash in Bormio.
At just 26 years old, Nova has participated in four events at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where her best result was a 14th place finish in the combined event.
She has been competing in World Cup races since 2019.
